The thing about punk is that no matter how mainstream the idea has become (hello, Avril), the look itself is eternally fringe and still strangely potent. The most important thing is to avoid cliché. In a world full of flirty, skull-print minidresses and Sex Pistols scented candles, the coolest, most stylish arbiter of punk remains Patti Smith, who has managed to distill the fierce, life-on-the-edge essence of punk into a signature formula of jeans, a T-shirt, and a narrow-cut black blazer. She’s kept her jeans ragged, her tops boyish, the color scheme spare (black, black, black, a bit of white), and the overall silhouette androgynous and skinny. Alexander Wang’s fall 2008 collection featured models storming the runway in a street urchin-y mix of slashed, holey denim, ripped stockings, and zippered black-and-white waistcoats. The whole thing was terribly defiant! And so great-looking. Not a safety pin, leather pant, or Union Jack in sight.
