Like a notorious tabloid fixture, coffee has endured both good and bad press. (Great for thinning hair! Terrible for pregnancy!) But as far as skin care goes, the drink is the ingredient equivalent of Reese Witherspoon—natural, versatile, and well liked by all. As numerous studies point to coffee’s skin-tightening and redness-soothing properties, it’s no wonder Mintel, a market research company, could report 115 new coffee-derived product launches between June 2007 and June 2008 alone. Now that new research has revealed the cancer-fighting abilities of coffee-derived caffeine, and in particular the super-antioxidant powers of the coffee cherry (the fruit surrounding each bean), the ingredient is generating more buzz than ever.
